Sleeping Sea offers vacation rentals on the northern shore of Orcas Island, WA about a 5 minute drive to the center of Eastsound. It is located in the town limits, but on the outskirts of town.Our property is in a quiet neighborhood on a private dead end road. It is about a 40 minute walk along preservation land, trails, and beach into the center of town. Please keep this in mind when choosing your accommodation. To keep the home private we will provide specific directions, details, and addresses will be provided in a welcome packet after confirmation of your booking.

Ferry Reservations

Washington State Ferries now take reservations for all San Juan Island routes. Please visit the Washington State FERRY RESERVATIONS website for more information and to book your ferry travel. We STRONGLY recommend making a reservation for all travel times, but especially during peak times to ensure boarding on the ferry of your choice.

The first 30% of reservable space on the Anacortes/San Juan Island route is released 2 months prior to the schedule start date. (All tall space is released within the 1st tier). An additional 30% of vessel space is released at 7:00am 2 weeks before each sailing date, and then the final 30% is released at 7:00am 2 days before each sailing date. Reservations are not required for travel on Washington State Ferries. Every ferry leaves 10-15% of the ferry capacity for standby travel for last minute travel or when reservations are unavailable. Sometimes there is extra space when driver's don't show or cancel their reservations.

Ferry Directions/Information

The Washington State Ferry departs from Anacortes, located approximately 2 hours northwest of Seattle. The ferry ride itself lasts close to 1.5 hours, usually with a stop or two at another island along the way. There are multiple sailings each day, with extra sailings on the weekends. Please check the schedule for seasonal changes. Washington State Ferries now offer FERRY RESERVATIONS. Please follow the link for more information and to make your travel reservations to ensure boarding on the ferry of your choice. The ferries still allow stand by travel without reservations, but for holidays and peak travel times, reservations are highly recommended.

If you are walking on the ferry, it is recommended you still arrive at least 30 minutes prior to sailing. There is paid overnight and weekly parking available at the Anacortes ferry terminal. Once on the islands without a car, there are shuttle operations during the summer months, taxi services, and limited rental cars available. There are no Car2Go or rideshare services.

Driving Directions from Seattle:

  • Follow I-5 North to Burlington/Highway 20 exit 230 (approximate. 90 min)
  • West on Highway 20 to Anacortes, continue right at roundabout onto Commercial Ave. (approx. 40 min)
  • Take a left on 12th St. off of Commercial, a Safeway will be on your right. Then follow signs to the ferry terminal.

Flying

Kenmore Air offers direct flights from Seattle's Boeing Field to Eastsound and Friday Harbor. Kenmore's floatplane service departs from Lake Union to West Sound, Deer Harbor, and Rosario. San Juan Airlines provides direct flights from Anacortes and Bellingham to Eastsound and Friday Harbor airports.

Airporter Shuttle

Shuttle service from Sea-Tac airport to Anacortes ferry terminal is available from Bellair Charters. There are multiple shuttles daily. Reservations are recommended.

Train

Amtrak provides daily train service from Seattle's King Street Station to Mt. Vernon. A shuttle or public bus can be arranged to transfer to the ferry terminal.

Victoria Clipper

The Victoria Clipper sails from Seattle's Pier 69 seasonally to Friday Harbor, San Juan Island only. Additional arrangements to Orcas Island would be necessary.
